AS WITH ALL THINGS BEAUTY, maintenance is at the forefront, particularly with red shades, as they are very vulnerable to the effects of UV damage. Red pigment can be tricky and is particularly susceptible to fading. To help maintain the intensity of colour, it is essential to use products specifically designed to conserve colour and then style with a UV protectant.
There are also some general makeup rules that apply when you have red hair, such as using yellow-based foundations to counteract any redness in the skin that will clash with red hair. For eyeshadow, soft chestnut browns and golden shades, which I am obsessed with, work brilliantly teamed with a chocolate-brown eyeliner rather than black. For cheeks and lips, a plum stain works a treat and the finishing touch, a hint of bronzer, will keep skin looking filled with light. Having said all this, I am a great one for breaking as many rules as possible. Hey, if it looks great, just wear it. I remember a phenomenal product that I still have, a Chanel Eye Gloss Quad with exceptional texture and colours, including a glossy white, gold, berry and black. The berry quadrant is the one I adore. It kind of looks as if I have been crying but in a really good way.
The one thing to remember with reds is that it is the hardest pigment to remove from your hair so be very, very sure before you take the leap. I would even go as far as trying on a red wig just to get a feel for how the colour works against your skin. The maintenance regime is demanding and to keep the red looking fresh, I was always visiting the salon mid-way between appointments for a colour refresher with a gloss or toner for a refreshing boost. If the annoying regrowth stripe is too much in evidence, grab a root concealer to help you limp to your next appointment.
In my very last experimental hair deviation, ever, before I settled down with Phil and Damien, I was working at Vogue and the mullet was having a brief resurgence on the catwalk and, you guessed it, I was talked into adopting this rather extreme cut. My hair was shoulder-length and brunette and my fringe began a new life that ended at the top of my ears, complete with an undercut. I convinced myself that my hair looked cool. And then, in an even feebler moment, I allowed the boundaries of good taste to be pushed even further by allowing the colourist to bleach my oversized fringe white-blonde. What? I hear you scream. Yes, I looked like a racoon and not in a good way. I froze on the spot but my upbringing prevented me from saying it was the ugliest fringe I had ever seen and could they please dye it back. So I reeled out of the salon and sprinted straight to the chemist.
